Seize Your Metabolic Opportunity

SOM Magazine

I am always looking for ways to maximize my energy; to show up lean and clean, for myself, my family, my work and for Spirit. Knowing how and what to eat after exercise can be the biggest difference-maker in terms of how well and effectively our bodies burn fat, sustain high levels of energy and recover well enough to do it again day after day!

As a life athlete, exercise is just one key to creating and sustaining life-long health and well-being. A healthy eating plan is another essential. Emerging science encourages a synergistic blend of timing with both exercise and eating to get the greatest return on these wellness investments.

In order to actualize improved results with your daily movement practice, simply dedicate yourself to eating within 45 minutes after your workout. Researchers call this the “glycogen window” or the metabolic window of opportunity. Whether your exercise of choice is walking, running, biking, yoga, pilates or lifting weights, studies show that we can increase our bodies’ ability to recover, burn fat, build lean, beautiful muscles, and support our immune systems by filling that 45-minute post-workout window with nourishing, conscious calories.

What are conscious calories?

The metabolic window is “best dressed” by choosing the right kind of carbohydrates and proteins and eating them in the right ratio. It’s simple and delicious! Set your intention and your stopwatch and aim for a carbohydrate to protein ratio of 2 to 1 within 45 minutes after you workout. For every 30 grams of carbohydrates, eat 15 grams of protein. You can choose whole grain cereal, waffles or toast balanced with eggs, yogurt or whatever protein makes you happy and healthy.james-headshots-005web

Our bodies are either building or breaking down; experiencing either a state of empowerment or decline at every stage. Employing active faith, affirming Spiritual lifestyle habits, sweating your prayers with exhilarating exercise and feeding your mind, body, soul with nutrients that bless your body and your greater being is a gift to present to yourself everyday! Begin today with stepping up and actively presenting your faith in action. Show up big and demonstrate your love of life and Spirit by being on fire with passion and purpose, alive and very well!
