Beat the Holiday Stress

Despite every attempt to remain cool, calm and collected throughout the holiday season, we all know this can be one of the most stressful times of the year. With the mile-long lines in the stores, a thinly stretched bank account, nagging in-laws and a few too many Christmas cookies, it’s possible for the holiday season stress to spin wildly out of control.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to. Here are three easy things you can do to make this holiday season a worry-free one:

1. Relax. Now more than ever, you need to take some time out for yourself. Though we try to squeeze every minute out of every day by cramming just one more get together or party into our schedules, we need to make an effort to carve out time to be alone too. Make sure you attend your weekly yoga class or commit yourself to enjoying a walk every afternoon. Treat yourself to a couple evenings by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate and a favorite book. If you don’t own one already, now may be the time to get a Human Touch Massage Chair, which will provide you with the therapeutic touch you need and deserve throughout the holiday season. Some might say it’s the gift that keeps on giving!

2. Simplify. Decide right now that you aren’t going to try to deliver the world this season. Think about the things that are most stressful for you about the holidays and figure out how you can reduce that added stress. If finances are tough, cut back on expensive presents and give the gift of time and attention to the ones you love instead. If you don’t have enough energy to throw a holiday party, cook the food and clean the house, ask for help or delegate some of the tasks by planning a potluck or cleaning only those rooms your guests will see. If you don’t think you can fit another obligation into your schedule, just say no. You won’t appreciate any of your holiday season if you’re too busy thinking about the next thing on your to-do list.

3. Enjoy. This is the time of the year when we get to visit with family we don’t normally see and catch up with old friends whom we’ve let slip through the cracks. Immerse yourself in the joy and festivities of the holiday season. If a pan of Christmas cookies burns or you don’t have time to buy the holiday stamps instead of using the standard ones to mail your holiday cards, don’t fret. Laugh and move on. Let the little things slide by, because, in the end, the holidays aren’t about the perfect cookies or postage stamps. They’re about living in the moment and being appreciative for the things and people we have in our lives. Make this holiday season one to remember because you enjoyed it … without the stress.
