The Newest Headlines Surrounding Massage Chairs and Human Touch

Congratulations to me, today is my birthday. Not the day you are reading this, but the day I am writing it. September 29, 2011. I’m the proverbial “another year older today.” Full-fledged GEEZER, to say the least. The funny part about the aging process is that your mind still thinks it’s in its prime time, while the body strongly disagrees. Some more than others. I am one of the lucky ones who is still reasonably functional at a time when many have given up on any thoughts of excessive physical activity all together and have taken to daytime television and long walks from the couch to the dinner table, and possibly back again.

I get asked often how it is that I can still surf many hours every day and not seem to break down from that much physical demand. I don’t have a secret formula or anything like that. In fact, many younger friends who work very hard at staying in surfing condition wonder how in the heck I can do it without having some sort of “routine” or diet, or whatever, like most of them do.

I think the reason I can still do it is pretty simple. I can surf everyday because I surf every day. It in itself is the exercise routine my body craves to keep itself happy and in shape. “In shape” is a relative term though. If you look at me you can see that I am NOT in shape as is the popular conception. I’m a bit fat and have a ton of aches and pains. Aches and pains go with the amount of surfing hours and age. I can deal with that by getting fairly regular massages and having the luxury of owning one of those killer Human Touch® massage chairs. That is my therapy. I do very little in the way of stretching or yoga. I keep thinking I should do more but all I ever do is a few minutes of simple leg and back stretches, and then I paddle right out. Sometimes I just yawn and go.

If there is any secret to being able to still surf hard and long at the more mature time in your life I think it is to just keep doing it as much as you can. It’s when you stop that your body weakens, and then it gets harder and harder to make that late drop, lean into a carve bottom turn, jam it off the top or even just make the paddle out. I never want to stop surfing, it makes me happy and is the essence of my life. I kinda am the poster kid for the “live to surf, surf to live” tribe.
That’s pretty much it in a nutshell. Surf as much as possible, take care of the pains with massage, no real diet other than nothing in excess. I am always moaning about wanting to be thinner and in better shape. But the fact is that I might not be in very “good looking” shape but I can paddle out and surf as hard or harder than most guys half my age (yeah I know that half my age is still pretty old, shut up!) As long as I keep surfing I think I have a long way to go before that last big spin out.

I feel good, am lucky to have a beautiful and fun wife and am happy. And, I have the desire still and can paddle out and surf as much as I want. Happy Birthday to me. Now, where’s my cake?

The causes of chronic pain are often difficult to identify as is pinpointing its exact location in your body.

In its most basic definition, pain is a signal from the affected area to the brain along the nervous system to warn you that something is wrong. This natural alarm system is a survival mechanism that we all possess.

Imagine that you have broken your ankle and have no signal to let your body know that you are in pain. Walking any further on the fracture would only worsen the injury.

In Eastern medicine, feeling pain means that there is a blockage somewhere in the body’s energy system; if the flow is good, then there is no pain.

So then what’s the difference between acute and chronic pain? Simply explained, acute pain means that the pain just happened to you by being hit, sprained or fractured, etc., but chronic means that you had the injury, which was acute pain a while ago, but is still causing ongoing, persistent pain.

Although there are many reasons for pain and many different kinds of pain, the neck, shoulder, lower back, and knees are common areas where chronic pain occurs from my experience.

If you have had chronic pain issues in these areas, the diagnostic test – physical exam, x-ray or MRI should be performed to find out the exact cause. Don’t just cover up the pain with pain killers. That won’t help your condition long-term.

If your pain is simply a musculoskeletal issue in the neck, shoulder, lower back, or knee, acupuncture can work very well to ease the pain. In fact, I have treated many people with these conditions using acupuncture therapy, and it has been successful enough to enable some of my patients to even cancel their scheduled surgery.

In terms of preventing chronic pain, when you receive your first pain signal, get the right diagnosis and treatment. If you have a sports-related injury, do the same thing, but also get the right rehabilitation treatment to help ensure a full recovery.

Four Ways to Manage Chronic Pain with Holistic Care

Gone are the days when health meant a singular focus on the physical aspects of the body. Traditional medical doctors may continue to “treat” health issues by addressing the symptoms with pills and surgery, but as more people realize the limitations of this process, they’re turning to holistic healthcare.

Holistic healthcare addresses more than the physical symptoms. Instead, a holistic approach to managing health issues looks at the body, mind and spirit as one working unit. Because these three parts of the body are intertwined with each other, they must be addressed together, and to do that, holistic care looks for the underlying causes of symptoms instead of artificially “curing” problems using invasive procedures.

This is good news for those who suffer from chronic pain. Though most people experience a bit of soreness or stiffness every once in awhile, waking up to pain every day can take a toll on a person’s physical, mental and emotional health. Whether that pain manifests itself as fibromyalgia, chronic migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome or some other chronic condition, it can hinder the quality of life. For those who suffer from chronic pain, however, there is a solution beyond popping pills or simply “dealing with it.” Using holistic health techniques like those listed below, people can live a healthy and happy life free of chronic pain.

Look at what you eat. A common cause of chronic pain is often affiliated with sensitivity to certain foods. For example, those who suffer from arthritis find that removing onions, potatoes, green peppers and tomatoes helps alleviate pain. Toxins in chemicals and molds may also be a problem. Using unscented laundry soap and avoiding chlorine bleach have been advantageous to sufferers of back pain and headaches.

Get a massage. Frequent massages not only feel good initially, but they also have long-term benefits as well. Massage helps because it is directed in the specific places where people feel their pain. Not only do people walk away from massages with an overall sense of well-being, but stress responses in the body associated with pain are reduced through massage.

Consider an upper cervical chiropractor. Unlike mainstream chiropractors that are known for their spine-twisting techniques, upper cervical chiropractors specifically focus on the top two bones in the backbone. When these bones are unaligned, they disrupt the flow of communication from the brain to the body, but when they are aligned properly, full neurological capacity is restored to the body, which can then heal itself.

Meditate. This is one of the most affordable, convenient and easiest holistic techniques chronic pain sufferers can use to manage their medical problems. Meditation is simply the practice of calming, quieting and clearing of the mind for inner contemplation. During meditation, there are real physical changes that occur in the body. These changes alter metabolism, blood pressure, brain chemistry and the respiratory system, creating a relaxation response. Studies have shown that those using meditation to manage chronic pain have an increased ability to perform their daily activities and long-term improvements in mood. It also helps with stress management, which is a root cause of pain for some people.
